Fes to Chefchaouen: Overnight Trip to the Blue City

Chefchaouen is about four hours north of Fes by road. This overnight trip gives you the blue medina at 08:00 — empty, before the coaches — a guided walk with a Chaouni guide, sunset from the Spanish Mosque, and Roman Volubilis on the drive back.

A day trip from Fes to Chefchaouen puts you in the blue lanes at exactly the hour they are fullest and the light is flattest. You take the photograph everyone else is taking, from the same three metres of alley, and then you get back in the car for four hours.

One extra day changes the trip completely. It is the most common add-on we are asked for by people already booked on a longer circuit.

The town after 17:00 is a different place

The coaches leave in the late afternoon. What is left is a small Rif town going about its evening — Place Outa el-Hammam filling up, the cafés turning their chairs out, and almost nobody photographing anything.

The Spanish Mosque sits on the hill east of the medina, twenty-odd minutes uphill on a rough path. It is where the town watches the sun go down behind the Rif, and it is worth the climb.

The 08:00 window

Morning is the reason to stay the night.

Between about 07:00 and 09:00 the lanes are empty, the shutters are still down, and the light comes down between the walls actually blue rather than washed-out white. This is the two-hour window that every photograph you have seen of Chefchaouen was taken in, and it is the one thing a day trip cannot buy you.

We leave the morning free deliberately. No schedule, no guide, no meeting point — just go and get lost in it. The medina is small enough that you will find your way out again.

Why it is blue, since everyone asks

Nobody can settle it. The most credible account is that Jewish residents began painting the lanes blue in the 1930s. Other explanations circulate — mosquito repellent, cooling, and, less charitably, tourism.

The road, and the bends

North from Fes through olive country and the Rif foothills. It is a sealed road in decent condition, but the last stretch climbing into the Rif is a sequence of tight bends and it turns stomachs.

If you are prone to travel sickness, say so when you book and sit in the front. This is a small thing that we would rather deal with before the drive than during it.

Adding a Chefchaouen tour from Marrakech

If you are starting further south, a Chefchaouen tour from Marrakech is a different trip — it is a long two days each way, and we would normally fold it into a longer northern loop rather than sell it as a there-and-back. Ask us and we will say honestly whether it is worth your days.

A second night, if you want the mountains

Most people find one night enough — Chefchaouen is small. Two suits photographers, and anyone who wants to walk.

The Akchour waterfalls are up the valley north-east of the town and make a full day: a walk of several hours on a rocky path along the river, with pools to swim in at the end. The Talassemtane national park behind the town is the other reason to stay on. Neither fits into this two-day itinerary — ask us and we will quote the longer version.
