What a Morocco luxury desert tour should actually mean

Type “luxury desert tour Morocco” into a search box and you get a hundred results, most of them the same handful of camps photographed at dusk.

Nobody regulates the word. On a luxury Sahara desert tour, Morocco gives you no guarantee of anything beyond what the operator is willing to write down. So here is ours, written down.

The camp, specified

• Four suites. That is the whole camp, and it is why the group never exceeds eight.
• A solid bed with a proper mattress, not a mat on a rug.
• An en-suite bathroom inside your tent — a flushing toilet and a hot shower behind a door, not a shared block across the sand.
• Electricity until late from the camp generator, with sockets in the tent.
• A dining tent and a cook on site. Dinner is cooked at camp, not carried in.
• Gnaoua musicians in the evening, and a telescope out on clear nights.

It is comfortable. It is not opulent, and we would rather you knew that before you arrived than after.

Four days, and the honest driving hours

Day four is nine hours. That is the honest cost of a round trip, and we publish it because you will feel it whether or not it appears in the listing. If it sounds like too much, the three-day crossing to Fes never doubles back — it just finishes in a different city.

Days one and two are split with real stops: Aït Benhaddou at a walking pace with a local guide, then the Todra Gorge at 09:00, before the coaches from the Dades hotels arrive between ten and one.

Why two nights in one camp

Most desert trips treat the Sahara as a stopover. Arrive at dusk, sleep, leave at dawn. You see the dunes twice, in almost the same light, and you spend more hours in a vehicle than on the sand.

The second night buys you the middle day. Sunrise at 06:30 and then back to bed if you want it. Nomad families, the fossil beds and the Khamlia Gnaoua musicians in the morning. Nothing at all in the afternoon.

Watching the same ridge of Erg Chebbi change through a full day is a different experience from photographing it once. That is the entire argument for this itinerary over a cheaper three-day round trip.

The vehicle and the driver

A private air-conditioned 4x4 for your party alone, with a licensed driver-guide who stays with you for all four days — not a different driver at each handover, which is how larger operators schedule long routes.

Bottled water is in the car throughout. Ask to stop and the car stops; there is no coach timetable to keep.

When to go

September to May. In June, July and August the Erg Chebbi routinely passes 45 °C in the afternoon and the camp becomes an endurance exercise rather than a pleasure. November to February the nights drop close to freezing — the suites have heavy blankets, but bring a warm layer.
