This 7 days Morocco itinerary covers all four imperial capitals — Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech — plus Chefchaouen and Roman Volubilis. It starts in Casablanca and ends in Marrakech. No desert, no backtracking, and a licensed guide inside every medina.

What one week in Morocco actually fits

One week fits the cities properly or the desert badly. This trip chooses the cities.

You get two of the finest medinas in the Arab world, a Roman city with its mosaics still lying in the open air, and two nights in the blue town rather than the usual rushed one. What you do not get is the Sahara — Merzouga is another three days from Fes and back, and cramming it in is how a week turns into a coach journey.

The four imperial cities, in order

Rabat is the working capital and the one most itineraries skip. The Kasbah of the Udayas is a small blue-and-white medina above the river, and the Chellah necropolis has storks nesting on Roman columns.

Meknes is Moulay Ismail’s city: Bab Mansour, the granaries, and a medina with almost no tour groups in it.

Fes is the reason people come. Fes el-Bali is the largest car-free urban area in the world and it does not open up on its own. Our guide there is licensed for Fes specifically, which is the difference between a coherent morning and getting quietly lost.

Marrakech closes the loop — Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the souks, and an evening on Jemaa el-Fnaa.

Honest driving hours

Most seven-day itineraries publish times copied from a mapping app. These are the hours the road takes with stops.

Around 16 hours of driving across seven days, with two days that have none at all. Day six is the long one: south through the Middle Atlas and Beni Mellal, with lunch in Khenifra. It is a dull road for the middle two hours and we do not pretend otherwise.

Why two nights in Chefchaouen

Almost every operator gives Chefchaouen one night. That means arriving at dusk and leaving after breakfast, which misses the two hours of morning light that are the entire reason to go.

We give it two. The guided walk happens at 09:30 on the second day, before the day-trippers from Tangier arrive, and the afternoon is free. If you would rather walk in the Rif or climb to the Spanish Mosque for the view, there is time to do it. Craft, not just monuments

Three of the seven days include a workshop rather than another gate.

A zellige atelier in Fes, where the tiles are still cut by hand with a hammer. The potters’ quarter outside Bab Ftouh. The dyers’ souk in Marrakech. These are working businesses, not demonstrations laid on for coaches, and nobody is required to buy anything. If you want to, your guide will tell you what a fair price looks like — which is the single most useful thing a local guide does. Culture and etiquette covers the rest.

Monument entry comes to roughly €45 per person and is not included. Neither are flights, insurance, lunches, most dinners or tips. Book a multi-city ticket: you land in Casablanca and fly home from Marrakech.
