Aït Benhaddou & Ouarzazate Day Trip from Marrakech

This day trip from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas at 2,260 m, spends two hours walking up through the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou, and takes in Kasbah Taourirt and the film studios at Ouarzazate before returning. Out at 07:00, back by 19:30.

Twelve and a half hours away from your riad, seven of them in a vehicle, for about three hours out of it. Most listings for this trip do not put those two numbers next to each other. We do, because roughly one person in five reads that and books an overnight in Ouarzazate instead — which is the right decision for them and we would rather they made it now.

For everyone else, the road is a large part of what you came for.

The Tizi n’Tichka

Two hours from Marrakech to the pass, climbing to 2,260 m through the High Atlas, then an hour down the far side.

It is sealed all the way and it bends constantly. If you get travel sick, sit in the front and tell us when you book — this is easier to arrange beforehand than at 08:30 on a hairpin. There is a stop at the pass itself, and an argan cooperative on the way up.

Aït Benhaddou, and going up

The ksar is a fortified earthen village on the far bank of the Ounila river. It has stood in for the ancient world on film for fifty years — Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones — and a handful of families still live inside the walls.

We arrive at 11:00 with a local guide who is from the village.

Go up. Most visitors photograph the ksar from the river, walk into the first few houses and stop. The climb to the agadir — the fortified granary at the top — takes about twenty minutes on uneven steps and gives you the whole valley. Almost nobody does it, and it is the difference between having seen a wall and having seen the place.

Lunch is beside the river at 13:30, and it is included.

Ouarzazate, and whether the studios are worth it

The afternoon is Kasbah Taourirt — a large Glaoui kasbah in the middle of town, restored in parts — and the film studios.

We look at the studios from the outside as standard. Entry to Atlas Studios is €8 and is not included, and the full tour adds around ninety minutes to a day that is already long.

Our honest position: it is worth it if you are a film person and not if you are not. The standing sets are impressive close up and look like plywood from thirty metres. Say the word when you enquire and we will build the time in; otherwise we spend it on the kasbah.

Telouet, if you would rather skip the studios

There is a better swap available, and hardly anyone asks for it.

Telouet is the old Glaoui kasbah up a side road off the Tichka, on the original caravan route. The exterior is collapsing and the interior rooms still have their zellige and painted cedar ceilings. There are usually more goats than visitors.

We can route the return through Telouet instead of extending the Ouarzazate stop. Ask.

That covers an air-conditioned minibus or 4x4, a licensed driver-guide, the local guide at Aït Benhaddou, lunch, and hotel pickup and drop-off in Marrakech. Film studio entry, drinks and tips are not included. Groups run up to sixteen — a minibus, not a coach — and below that the vehicle is your party’s alone.

This exact road — Tichka, Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate — is day one of every desert itinerary we run. If the Sahara is anywhere on your list, do not spend a day driving it and back. Spend the same morning driving it onwards.

The three-day crossing to Fes covers this ground before lunch on day one and ends at the Erg Chebbi dunes. The four-day luxury escape does the same at a gentler pace. Either way you see Aït Benhaddou with the same guide and then keep going east instead of turning around.
