Essaouira from Marrakech: 3 Days on the Atlantic Coast

Essaouira is three hours west of Marrakech on the Atlantic. This three-day trip gives you two nights inside the walled medina, a beach day at Sidi Kaouki, and the town after 16:00 — when the day-trippers have gone and the light finally does something.

Essaouira day trip from Marrakech, or three days?

An Essaouira day tour from Marrakech is six hours in the car for about four hours on the ground, and those four hours land between 11:00 and 16:00 — the busiest part of the day, in the flattest light, with every coach in town.

We sell that day trip, because people ask for it. We would rather you took the three-day version.

The difference is not the extra sightseeing. It is that the town changes character in the late afternoon. The coaches leave for Marrakech around four, the ramparts empty, the fishing boats come back in, and the place stops being a photo stop and starts being a port again.

The wind is the whole story

Essaouira was Mogador, a Portuguese-fortified port that traded with Europe when the rest of the coast did not. Orson Welles filmed Othello here, and the Skala ramparts have barely changed since.

The reason any of it survives in this condition is the wind. It blows almost constantly, typically hardest from April through August, and it has kept the town cool, kept mass tourism moderate, and made it one of the better windsurfing spots in Africa.

It also means this: when Marrakech is 42 °C in July, Essaouira is around ten degrees cooler and you will want a jacket after dark. If you came for a still, hot beach, this is the wrong coast — go south. If you came to be able to sleep in August, this is exactly the right one.

The Marrakech to Essaouira road

Every Essaouira tour from Marrakech crosses the same three hours of Chiadma plain on a good sealed road. No mountain passes, no switchbacks, and the easiest drive of any trip we run — which is a large part of why it suits families with young children.

We stop at a women’s argan cooperative at about 11:00, and at the goats in the argan trees if they happen to be up. They often are not. Anyone who guarantees you goats is guaranteeing something they do not control.

The argan cooperatives, honestly

Some cooperatives on this road are genuine women’s collectives that pay their members. Others are shops with a woman cracking nuts by the door for the photograph.

We use one we know, and your guide will tell you what the oil should cost per litre before you go in. Nobody is required to buy anything. If the price you are quoted is double what your guide said, walk out — that is what the information is for.

Things to do in Essaouira over two full days

The medina is small and flat, and you cannot get seriously lost in it. Two days covers it without hurrying:

• The Skala ramparts at the north end, with the brass cannons and the sea coming over the wall.
• The fishing port at lunchtime, where the day’s catch is grilled at the stalls in front of you.
• The thuya woodworkers, in the workshops under the ramparts.
• The galleries. Essaouira has had a working painting scene since the 1960s.
• Sunset from the ramparts, which is the single thing everyone remembers.

Day two: Sidi Kaouki

Forty minutes down the coast, a wide beach with almost nothing on it, and a full free day. Surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, horse riding along the sand, or a book and a towel.

The Atlantic here is bracing all year — around 18–20 °C in summer. Adults find that cold. Children do not appear to notice.

Surf lessons and board hire are not included, and we would rather book them for you locally than mark them up. Just ask.

Where we stay

Two nights in a riad inside the medina walls, not on the beach road outside them. It is a five-minute walk to the port and to Bab Doukkala, and it means you are inside the town at the hours the town is best.

April to October is the season. October and early November are the best beach weeks — warm, and the wind usually drops. The best time to visit Morocco sets it against the rest of the country.
